PostgreSQL and Kernel 2.6.x

Kernel 2.6.x was what I was waiting to deploy with PostgreSQL, on a production server. The reason is quite obvious are The I/O improvements For me I/O is most important as that is what a database needs. With higher I/O rates the read write operation would be faster, thus reducing the query over head. Though I have not come across any benchmark which justifies my fantasy but that is what my tech head allows me to believe. Newer X server which would run much faster. This is another aspect as the server and client works on the same system. With front end running and db calls on the same server X server performance do helps. IPv6 is on by default thus I disabled it as As root in the end of /etc/modprobe.conf file. alias net-pf-10 off alias ipv6 off This helped as initialization time now was lesser. To sum all I did not run any benchmarks which had before and after specs. But sheer logic says kernel 2.6.x would make PostgreSQL much faster. Would Po...

Squid Configuration

I always desired to deploy sqiud at my place for basic internet proxing, recently I got time to fulfill my this desire. So on a brand new FC-3 installation the rpm precompiled squid was configured with help of webmin . At times I get this feeling that linux power is in CUI , this is very correct in Squid perspective also as configuring it from squid.conf file is faster than the webmin interface. I used the PAM authentication tool for squid as this way I would not have to maintain separate accounts. In an rpm based install pam authentication tool pam_auth is under /usr/lib/squid Their are many other authentication methods for squid one can even use MySQL and PostreSQL for authentication. In my case PAM was being used and since a shadow file maintains the system account. The pam_auth module must be started with root permission or to be more specific set uid root for this I had to do chown root /usr/lib/squid/pam_auth chmod u+s /usr/lib/squid/pam_auth Restarted squid with co...

Am I changing or they ?

Recently due to the "Nokia Innovators 2004 award" I have earned a tag. At times people surrounding me are often heard to be saying Award mila hai na , aur TV pee bhi ayega , tabhi but I know nothing has changed for me , I am the same Vishal , who liked to watch Amanda Show and fantasize Jimmy Neutron's gadgets. So what have changed ? its people perspective that have changed , they have some new information about me, and information in computers is defined as "A data that was not available before, even a bit of it", Now this new data with people is tempting them to behave in such a way that I feel these people are genuinely happy with me and my achivement. If the above thesis is wrong then I pray to my Lord that "Please assist and guide me such that my head and ego remains grounded." On cautious note I would make sure that I dont loose the fun of achivement but then their lies a very thin line between fun and ego resulted from achivement. In lar...

Linux a fashion statement for geeks

Everyone has a fashion style and outlook. Now days in Indian geek community their goes a trend where every kid on the street knowing about Linux and windows, would fantasize his/her love for Linux aloud enough that even politicians on election campaign would shy off. Is Linux or OSS becoming a fashion statement for geeks. To my opinion yes, but this is not good for OSS / Linux movement as inefficient and untrained geeks may ruin the party. That's why the corporate are now looking for certified professional in Linux. Opps ! I have to prepare for RHCE ;)

Solaris Rocks

Thanks to time out at Delhi for [*SENSORED* 2004 Award],I was able to download Solaris 10.0 for x86. The installation does not appeal as compared to Linux and other *nix OS. Installation was across 4 CDs which took nearly 1 hr on Athlon XP 2400 Mhz Pr, 512 MB DDR. The installation uses the function keys for navigation and if your Keyboard is not identified we have to use combinations of keys for getting our job done. After the installation was over the system went for a reboot. Thank God the GUI was working this time (I was not able to get GUI in Solaris 9.0 x86). In GUI we have two desktop environment JDS (Java Desktop System), CDE (Common desktop environment). I Selected for the JDS, boy it is eye candy, The JDS appeal a lot . StarOffice 7 was preinstalled. Though I was not able to find the Mozilla browser which was easy locatable in CDE. Anyways I am looking to docs and would use Solaris to test and deploy SaiPACS. looking forward for BSD installation going on in other machine...

Innovators, attributes in common

Thanks to the National Geographic Channel people ;-) and shortage of rooms at Intercontinental The Grand hotel (this is what they told us), we three Mr. Somender Singh , Mr. Sandeep Sharma and me , shared a single suite called the "Perl Luxury". During the whole interaction and stay, I noticed many similarities among us. Since we were sharing single room we did our best to facilitate each other. We all were polite and humble here I recall the phrase "Failures makes a man humble", and Mr. Somender Singh were the most humble among us, but does this mean he was a failure ? NO !! , he have faced more hardships than us, in convincing world about his great innovation. We respected each others work. We were never hesitated to ask small things to each other, taking example of electric kettle , we taught each other how to use it. We did not relished the hotel food, but the idli samber at Sarvodya gave us the full diet, much better we did'nt t...

Pending posts

Many of my posts are pending because I am waiting for events to materilize. Once it materilize, masala text would be readable

Departing

After we got shoot, it was time to leave for our destinations. We dropped Mr. Somender Singh somewhere near Apollo hospital en route to Old Delhi where Mr. Sandeep Sharma called for a cab which would take him to his place. I waited in the waiting room for the clock to strike 2230 hrs such that I board my train to my place. While we said good bye to Mr. Somender he got a bit of emotional, and in this bout of emotion he tipped the cab driver with Rs. 100.00/-. God bless this (Mr. Somender) with all his grace and love he is a good guy with dyed hair.

They Shoot us

Silence please and action said Jogiraj and all of us at our turn said the magic words of "Hi ! I am blah blah from blah blah , and my innovation is more blah blah this will height of blah blah". This was not that easy we stammered and more often said sorry than our lines but this patient creative head Mr. Jogiraj was a great guy who finally got the shot done. When they were shooting me with their Sony DV professional 1.5 lacks camera, nicely placed on tripod, my words were running like chickens, more worse I was sitting on sofa , as if I was on ice but again the smiling face and warm words of Mr. Jogiraj melted all the ice and my head was moving like the dancer did in damm mast kalandar song with several sorry and anh anh .... the shot was approved, fine now let me tell my maa that I would be on satellite T.V. Thank God I never decided to be an actor.

Bill ke fatke ne diya joor ka jhatka

While checking out of the hotel, we asked for our bills and Mr. Somender had to pay nearly Rs. 4000 /- for his phone calls, not sparing me the beautiful receptionist slapped me with Rs 615.00 for internet, thank God she did not charged for the ear to ear smile she passed on to us both (me and Mr Somender) anyways I paid happily, because I had downloaded nearly 10 flavors of Linux + Solaris 615.00 bucks for a download of 10 GB data was a great and tempting deal for a guy who was haunted by dial-up connection.

Judges roasted me like tandori chicken

With Swami's grace I attained this position. The demo was a so so for me , after I finished the demo + presentation my room partners did their best to give me a feeling of "Yeh ! boy you were guns" , but I knew I was not, may be this is because I have always marked high standards for myself, this time I was too much harsh on myself. Judges asked me tons of questions which again was not answered by me as per the high standards, marked by me for myself. I felt like as if I was going through viva-voice, only difference this time was , they (Judges) were referring the books / code written by me.

12 Hrs to go.. ..

I am true taurean with lazy bones, its only 12 hrs for the presentation and I have not prepared my slides yet, the worst part of it is that I have decided to do it in the morning at 0300hrs, now I am going to sleep .. .. ..

In train

Now I am in the Train 4554 Himachal Express which left Una at 21:45 Hrs. I am in AC-2 Tier because National Geographic people said they would be paying for all the travel / boarding expenses. one thing I must admit, though I have full privacy thanks to curtains but this privacy is eating me up, I cannot look out of the window. To me this is some sort of den, no one passing by my Side Upper birth No 24 , stares at me because of my laptop. I have prepared some slides of my presentation at least I have decided on the content. Ah I remember I have not locked my luggage hope this is not an issue in AC compartments, praying that I would be able to find my luggage when I wake up in the morning. Just to make a list of what I am carrying : Brief Case contains my clothes , handycam , paper for printing , Compact Discs for recording + Tapes for video shooting. Main Development Server + Inkjet Printer. Tripod for the handycam. of cource my laptop. Now I would have to sh...

I don't know how to react

Reached Delhi bang on time. I swear myself that I would not in future ever travel in AC class. I missed all the good things like good air, view and at times I felt like suffocated. Coach was totally quite no rattle tattle of rail tracks total pin drop silence. After all the travel, reached The Intercontinental Grand Hotel by 0630 hrs.

Leaving for NGC Nokia innovator of the year award

Till 1700 Hrs I was writing codes for SaiPACS.It seems I am now bit used to tight schedules I was going for such a big event in my life and was not a bit tensed or worried , was working as this was my schedule, and was taking regular breaks from my work. Anyways I started packing for New Delhi at 1700 Hrs.It took me nearly an hour to get my things together. Took a short footage of the situ when I was ready to leave.Initially I decided to take along the camera with me to station and record everything their but Later on decided negative such as to avoid getting to much attention. This is a rememberable moment for me but for people around me its just another day.
